DigITecT

AG Turbo Joint project: Digitalization and interdisciplinary design technologies of turbomachinery for the energy transition (DigITecT)
Subproject: Radial expander in energy storage applications (WP 2.2b)
Experimental and numerical investigation of the influence of manufacturing-related surface quality of turbine blades on turbine performance (WP 2.3c)

Description of the joint project
The joint project DigITecT (Digitization and interdisciplinary design technologies of turbomachinery for the energy turnaround) addresses technological issues that are central to the conceptual design and realization of new turbomachinery for flexible use in applications for energy storage and conversion. The operating conditions prevailing in the new cycle processes (supercritical or transcritical states of the working medium, use of dense gases/fluids, use of hydrogen), which are suitable for efficient and low-cost energy storage and conversion, result in new working paradigms for the turbomachines in the compression and expansion tracts and thus fundamentally new design and maintenance requirements. These can only be mastered with the help of end-to-end virtualization of the entire manufacturing and operating process while maintaining a strong interdisciplinarity.

Description of the work packages
The overall objective of the main work package 2.2 is to extend the design systematics of the machines (compressors and turbines) used in the cycle processes of thermal storage to take into account the special thermodynamic properties of the media (𝐶𝑂2 and 𝐻2).
