Numerical methods

The Numerical Methods Group is the heart of the Chair of Thermal Turbomachinery and Aero Engines. It is primarily concerned with the development and implementation of state-of-the-art computational methods to improve our understanding of turbomachinery and complex energy conversion systems and to and to streamline the design of such systems.

Through the use of advanced computational tools and techniques, the team is able to solve some of the most complex challenges in the areas of real gas and turbulent flows, combustion, turbomachinery design, flow in porous media, and Power systems. In addition, a large emphasis is placed on fundamental research of turbulence near rough and irregular surfaces, supercritical flows and non-ideal gas dynamics, and thermodynamics.

The team has a broad range of interdisciplinary expertise and combines technical skills in programming, high-performance and GPU computing, as well as Physics-Informed Neural Networks-based methods.
